## What is crew work and rest hours software?

Crew work and rest hours software records how many hours each seafarer works and
rests each day and checks those hours against the rest-hour rules that apply to
the vessel, so operators can prevent fatigue and stay compliant with the MLC 2006
and STCW. NOZZLE Work Rest Hours is the work-and-rest capability inside
[NOZZLE Crew Management](/solutions/crew-management-software/).

NOZZLE logs each crew member's daily working and resting hours and validates them
against configurable conventions built on the MLC 2006 and STCW framework. The
statutory minimums — at least 10 hours of rest in any 24-hour period and 77 hours
in any 7-day period, with rest split into no more than two periods — are applied
automatically, and any breach is flagged as a non-conformity for that crew member
and day. Hours can be planned per seafarer (Schedule by Crew) or by reusable duty
schedule and working-hour template (Schedule by Rank), and the module produces
the statutory Record of Hours of Rest for inspections and audits.

Work and rest hours sit alongside the other NOZZLE crew capabilities:
[crew planning and assignments](/solutions/crew-planning-software/),
[appraisals](/solutions/crew-appraisal-software/),
[payroll](/solutions/crew-payroll-software/) and the
[crew matrix](/solutions/crew-matrix-software/), [contract management](/solutions/crew-contract-management-software/) and [medical records](/solutions/crew-medical-records-software/). Book a [demo](/request-demo/) to
see it with your flag-state conventions.

## Capabilities

### Every breach flagged before it becomes a finding
_MLC & STCW Compliance_

A single missed rest-hour breach can turn into a port-state finding or a vetting observation. NOZZLE records each crew member's daily working and resting hours and validates them against configurable conventions based on the MLC 2006 and STCW rest-hour framework. The framework's statutory minimums — at least 10 hours of rest in any 24-hour period and 77 hours in any 7-day period — are applied automatically, and breaches are flagged as non-conformities per day.

* Configurable work and rest conventions based on MLC 2006 and STCW * Automatic checking against the 10-hour / 24-hour and 77-hour / 7-day minimums * Per-day non-conformity detection for rule breaches * Holiday calendars applied to the schedule * Detailed logs of each crew member's work schedule

### Plan a schedule once, apply it across the rank
_Schedules_

Work and rest hours can be planned from two views. Schedule by Crew shows an individual seafarer's day-by-day hours with running totals and rolling compliance, while Schedule by Rank lets you define reusable duty schedules and working-hour templates that apply to a rank across the fleet.

* Schedule by Crew — per-seafarer daily working and resting hours * Schedule by Rank — reusable duty schedules and working-hour templates * Overtime and additional-hours tracking * Rolling 24-hour and 7-day rest checks

### Hand inspectors the statutory record, ready to go
_Reporting_

NOZZLE generates the Record of Hours of Rest, the statutory per-seafarer rest-hours record for a selected period that operators present at inspections and audits, together with duty-schedule reports.

* Record of Hours of Rest for a selected period * Duty-schedule reports by rank * Records ready for MLC and port-state inspection

## Frequently asked questions

### What rest-hour rules does NOZZLE check?
NOZZLE validates crew hours against configurable conventions based on the MLC 2006 and STCW framework, which requires a minimum of 10 hours of rest in any 24-hour period and 77 hours of rest in any 7-day period. Rest may be split into no more than two periods, one of at least 6 hours, with no more than 14 hours between consecutive rest periods. Conventions can be configured to a fleet's flag-state and regime requirements.

### How are rule breaches handled?
NOZZLE flags every breach of the assigned convention as a non-conformity against the specific crew member and day, so office and vessel staff can see and address rest-hour exceptions before they accumulate.

### Can schedules be planned by rank?
Yes. Alongside per-seafarer scheduling (Schedule by Crew), NOZZLE lets you define reusable duty schedules and working-hour templates by rank (Schedule by Rank) that apply across the fleet.

### Does NOZZLE produce the Record of Hours of Rest?
Yes. NOZZLE generates the statutory Record of Hours of Rest for a selected period, along with duty-schedule reports, for MLC compliance and port-state inspection.
